The first section of the training dealt with the strategic issues that relates to the business of pig farming, we cover topics such as.

·      The economics of pig production – this section covers a comprehensive business plan with (budgets, cashflows, housing plan, equipment and procedures) and  how to raise and manage the finance required to manage their farm till the farm become self-sufficient and ultimately become profitable

In the operation section, we looked at the fundamental theories and the technical know-how require to set up and run a profitable pig farm

·      Where to locate your farm, the size and how far should your farm be to your base as the owner, proximity to market, feed suppliers, good neighbourliness and your base as the owner etc

·      Some valuable tips on how to build a cost-effective, functional and durable pig pens

·      How to choose the best pigs and transport them to your farm

·      How to meet the need and productively manage the growth of the different categories of pigs on your farm. E.g. boar, gilt, sow, weaners and piglets and ensure that they give you’re the best.

·      Different ways to reduce pig feed cost using the locally available feed ingredients

In the marketing section, we look at the various people who are involved in the marketing of your pigs from the farmgate to the consumer and how this relationship affects the market price of your product.

·      We look at different methods that you could use to bypass the middlemen and also add value to your pigs or pork products to improve your profitability.

The uniqueness of this training is that it did not only tell you what to do but we demonstrated to you via video how to do it as if you were with us on the farm as we talked through the process with our participants. In the practical session , we showed you how to cleaning and disinfectant your pen, assessment of diseased, restraining pigs, administration of medications and  performing some minor surgery on the farm.
